“Brigid Was Hung By Her Hair from the Second Story Window,” by Gillian Daniels
Horror upon horror! You keep wanting Brigid to choose her own fate, but when she does so it’s with shocking perversity. All her troubles seem so easily avoided and yet as inevitable as the verses of a song. She wins something in the end—not a happy life, but a beautiful one. At least, that’s what I see in it.
