This story’s vaguely historical, vaguely dystopian setting inspires me. It seems contrived to meet the needs of the story, and it’s somehow compelling, maybe for its sheer weirdness and cruelty, maybe because it’s well-developed enough to feel real. Same with the language (so many capitalized words) and plot (so much cruelty).

I like that Granta’s fiction is so often fun to read. It’s such a seemingly small thing and so many literary magazines fail at it.
