The feeling of wanting to avoid getting involved, avoid responsibility for an unknown and threatening situation. The narrator’s unreasonable resistance is just reasonable enough that you can’t help sympathizing. Likewise the antagonist’s unreasonable demands, his anger that seems displaced from a dangerous target to a safe one. I like this piece.
