A really good portrait of a complicated power relationship.

I see how this was inspired by Jamaica Kincaid’s “Girl,” but I think it’s a very different piece. Its focus is on the monologuing narrator, and not on the listener, or on the pain of trying to live up to impossible expectations. The title doesn’t work very well, partly for that reason, partly because it’s too generic.
