Effectively painful. The refrain “Bolivia is the poorest country in South America” is repeated just often enough to remind us of the cruelty of what’s going on, how little attention the world is willing to give.
I’m disappointed, though, that the story spends so much time on the main character’s attempts at a love life. There’s not enough character depth or romantic tension to make that interesting to me. The most interesting thing about it is what it represents (a U.S. journalist sleeping with a Bolivian casually, colonialistically, while practically pining after one of his own countrywomen).
