“Europe Is the Invention of Americans,” by Charles Rafferty
From Per Contra: An International Journal of the Arts, Literature, and Ideas, issue 28, summer 2013 (story here)
Seems to be about a passive-aggressive marital war that the narrator is winning. Though we know, I suppose, that there can be no winners.
“I say Europe is the invention of Americans whose mistakes are so bad, so big, so colossal, they want for them to have happened on the other side of the world.” Heh. I guess the narrator’s problem is that he can’t let past mistakes remain distant, and for that reason he can’t behave normally in society; he refuses to keep up what he sees, fairly or not, as pretenses.
The ending is too abrupt for my taste.
