Smart, mean, painfully honest. When Bernice’s friend turns against her, I start feeding her lines in my head: “Bob my hair? Oh, I’m tired of that fad. I’ve decided to give myself a prison tattoo with a hatpin. Who wants to watch?” But my notion of what twenties kids would have considered daring fun is probably way off the mark.
