On the origin of stories

This is something I talk about a lot; I tend to understand fiction as wish fulfillment for writers and readers alike. It’s not the most sophisticated approach to understanding fiction, nor is it sufficient by itself, but it goes a long way, and I think it cuts through some of the bullshit that naturally accompanies the idea of fiction as a fine art.
