Spoilers, but … I’m not familiar with the author and didn’t read the tags (just followed this recommendation), so when I started reading this I thought it was nonfiction. I was surprised how effective it was, not being sure what I was reading.

It seems unusual these days for any publication to drop the fiction/nonfiction labels and just let each piece stand on its own. I think the New Yorker used to do that.
