But also very familiar. Kids are unbelievably and systematically cruel to each other; society makes people sacrifice their individual talents and specialness in order to belong; whether you conform or rebel, the results are horrifying. This kind of story gets told a lot, so I don’t understand why “Ponies” got so much attention. Presumably not because cotton-candy blood is awesome. Maybe because My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic premiered around the same time, breathing some extra life into the metaphor?
